On October 17, organize World March of Women actions where you live!

Dear Friends,

Last December the World March of Women adopted our Women’s Global Charter for Humanity which describes the world that we as women want to build, based on five key values: freedom, equality, solidarity, justice and peace. (You will find the Charter on our Web site:  www.worldmarchofwomen.org).  Since March 8 of this year, the Charter has travelled around the world, and women have organized actions to raise awareness of its content, challenge decision-makers in their countries, organize debates and support their daily campaigns.

During this World Relay, a solidarity patchwork quilt was constructed with a cloth square from each country. You can see this quilt and monitor the Relay’s progress by logging on to a new 2005 section of our Web site: http://mmf.lecarrefour.org

24 Hours of Feminist Action in Pursuit of the Sun

On October 17, 2005, women the world over will follow the sun around the earth in an action called 24 hours of feminist solidarity. At noon, in all time zones on the planet, we will take to the streets to show our support for the Women's Global Charter for Humanity and the values therein.   The actions will begin in the Pacific Islands (New Caledonia, Samoa, etc.), continue in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe simultaneously, and last in the Americas. In 24 hours, we will circle the planet and make our voices heard.

We invite you to organize an action to mark the 24 hours of feminist solidarity in your community (see the enclosed pamphlet for more details) and to mobilize the women there: women in your group, your friends and family members (who could organize actions in their workplace, their children’s school, etc.), feminist groups and networks, allies and media. Spread the word!

Women’s solidarity will also be expressed by raising money to contribute to a scholarship for a woman to study communications in Burkina Faso (see:

http://mmf.lecarrefour.org/solidarity24h/en

October 17 will be an exceptional opportunity for us to say loud and clear that we are marching together to build another world, that we will never give up, that we belong to the resistance.

Means to Mobilize and Promote Your Activities

On our Web site you will find the tools you will need to mobilize people (news and photos of the Relay, a press kit, the Charter, the WMW logo, etc.). A sticker that you can print to use for your actions will be available soon.

Let Us Know What You’re Doing on October 17!

Send us a description of your actions so that starting today, we can post news about what’s coming up around the planet during the 24 Hours of Feminist Solidarity.  You can check our Web site on the actual day to monitor what’s happening from one time zone to the next.  We will also be publishing a special issue of our newsletter to describe the actions planned around the world (the deadline to receive news for the special issue is September 12). Please send your details regarding the 24 Hours to this address:  24hrs2005@gmail.com

What is the World March of Women?

IT’S NOT JUST A ONE-TIME EVENT: IT’S AN IRREVERSIBLE MOVEMENT!

The World March of Women is an international feminist action network connecting grass-roots groups working to eliminate poverty and violence against women. Its values centre on the globalization of solidarity, diversity, women’s leadership, and the strength of alliances among women’s and other social movements. Born of the desire to unite women of the world around a common project, the March rapidly established itself as a formidable international movement after organizing the World March of Women in the Year 2000. The March is composed of close to 6000 participating groups in 164 countries and territories. Will you be among us?
